Current status of monkeypox virus

According to WHO's news on June 7, in just three weeks (May 13 to June 7), more than 1,000 monkeypox cases have been reported in 27 non-monkeypox-endemic countries and regions. WHO believes cases may be underestimated due to limited epidemiological and laboratory information, and cases may also occur in other countries. But the agency said it still maintains a "moderate" global public health risk assessment for the monkeypox outbreak.

Monkeypox, a zoonotic disease caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV), is considered the most important orthopoxvirus-borne disease in humans since the "eradication" of smallpox. The monkeypox virus is capable of human-to-human transmission through diseased organisms, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and pollutants, but this route of transmission usually requires prolonged close contact.

Monkeypox virus is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus that can grow in culture in African green monkey kidney cells, causing cytopathic effects. The virus can be diagnosed by several tests: enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), antigen detection test, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, or virus isolation by cell culture.
